If your idea of good pizza is something similar to a New York slice, then you may want to check out Old World Pizza. Located on a strip mall in the somewhat expanding neighborhood of West Miami, this small hole-in-the-wall restaurant is making some pies inspired by what you would find in The Big Apple. At Old World, you can find simple, by-the-slice, medium-thin, crusty and lightly chewy style pizza. Their marinara sauce is (for lack of better words) tomato-ey, with a balanced sweetness and acidity and the barest hint of herbs. The cheese is applied with enough restraint to give you enough fat and chewiness for a satisfying bite without giving you that overindulgent feeling of biting into a blob of grease. And the crust is crisp and well browned, with a small bending over of the tip when held parallel to the table but still with enough structure to hold together for a perfect New York fold. Old World Pizza uses a brick oven, giving you a more consistently baked pizza with a satisfying bite.

The location is pretty small with enough seating for about 12 people, and the walls are painted in chalk wall paint to transform the wall into a house-sized chalkboard, allowing for a fun atmosphere that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Walking in and seeing past customers’ artwork adds a sense of being a neighborhood joint, something that is welcomed when looking for a place to take the family.

Prices are affordable and they do offer other items on the menu, but I would stick with the well-executed pizza. Although the sizes can be large, the slices are not as filling as you would think since the crust and toppings are not as heavy as other pizza joints. Let’s just say that if two slices is your typical lunch, three would be the magic number for you here. I usually go with a half white, half standard pie. The white pizza is made with Fresh mozzarella, ricotta, Romano cheese, olive oil, fresh garlic and fresh basil and the standard is made with fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, topped with Romano cheese and fresh basil. No matter which route you go, the toppings are of high quality and the pizza is made with a sense of care and precision that translates into every bite.

I would recommend Old World Pizza to anyone and everyone looking for something similar to New York pizza. Usually, neighborhood pizza joints are very similar throughout, but Old World is different enough that it stands out on its own.
