Within the family of Calamari in the Grove is a small bar called Taurus Beer and Whiskey House. Calamari can be considered an upscale sort of restaurant, with white-linened tables and formal service, but although Taurus is a related restaurant, you would make a mistake in expecting the same. Instead, Taurus is like a younger brother of the more refined Calamari, a younger brother still going through a rebellious faze. I don’t mean this as a bad thing in the least, as the atmosphere and food at Taurus is exactly what I am looking for when deciding on where I want to spend my afternoons and nights after a long day at work.

Taurus has been in Coconut Grove for what seems like forever. In fact, a quick word with an employee informed me that after Tobacco Road closes later this year (R.I.P Tobacco Road), Taurus would have the oldest liquor license in Miami. I don’t know about you, but this speaks to me about the influence and staying power of a place. Taurus is a local’s bar, with a non-pretentious atmosphere and no-frills type of service that is willing to get you absolutely anything you want in order to make you happy. It’s all about unity here, making a patron feel like they’re part of a neighborhood where everyone knows each other and drinks with each other. Speaking of drinks, the whiskey selection at Taurus rivals that of more chic and known restaurants such as Yarbird in South Beach. An extensive list of literally dozens of whiskeys line the menu, making for quite a night if you’re into that sort of thing.

The chefs at Taurus are cranking out incredible bar food and are updating their classics recently. The burger and fries is a classic Coconut Grove dish, making for one of the more underrated burgers in Miami. The burger itself is reminiscent of a backyard cookout where your father actually knows how to handle a grill. The fries are good on their own, but sprinkled with truffle oil they are heavenly. As mentioned previously, the kitchen is trying to keep up to date with trends in the food industry by getting a bit creative and whimsical. You can find Hialeah sliders, petite burgers made using wagyu beef and topped with pico and chimichurri between two fried plantains. You can also find Avocado fries, which are exactly what they sound like—avocado slices that are battered and deep-fried to perfection. The quality of food that is offered at Taurus is unlike that of a typical bar, which makes it a place to visit whether you just want food or drinks.
