Chef/ Owner Angelo Elia of Casa D’Angelo Brings Delicious Roman Cuisine to Delray Beach, FL

Acclaimed Italian culinary maestro Angelo Elia, who has received raves for his Casa D’Angelo restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and the Atlantis Hotel in Paradise Island and his wine bar/pizzeria, has opened his newest dining concept of traditional Roman cuisine in Delray Beach, Florida. Opened in early November 2011, D’Angelo Trattoria features authentic Roman offerings served up in warm, contemporary setting.

Under the auspices of Elia and executive chef Rickie Piper, D’Angelo Trattoria reflects a cozy family home in Rome. Nestled just off Atlantic Avenue in a historic 1920’s Delray cottage, the trattoria provides a convivial setting where guests can enjoy some of the finest, authentic Italian cuisine in South Florida. “I always want to give guests the best possible quality in food and service,” Elia says, “D’Angelo Trattoria can be a local hangout, a place for cocktails and antipasti or to celebrate special occasions – there’s something for everyone.” It is this welcoming ambiance, fine service and memorable cuisine that has consistently landed Elia’s restaurants on top-rated listings and earned him awards from Zagat, Wine Spectator, and Florida Trend.

At the helm of the new trattoria is executive chef Piper, who has worked under Elia for over a decade, running his kitchens at the various D’Angelo outposts, as well as opening the Atlantis Resort location. Hailing from Italy, where he studied under some of the region’s most prominent chefs at Istituto Alberghiero Torcarbone, Piper is the perfect fit for the new Roman-inspired eatery.

The expansive menu at D’Angelo Trattoria offers an array of appetizers, salads, carpacci, pastas, prime meats, seafood and pizzas from the wood-burning oven. According to Piper, “We’ve created a menu of traditional dishes made with the finest ingredients available that are reminiscent of a Roman holiday.” Diners can begin the Italian experience with an assortment of antipasti ($9- $16) including roasted veal bone marrow served with casareccio bread, parsley and caper pesto; traditional eggplant with a sweet provolone timbale; and creamy Italian burrata cheese over roasted fava beans with watercress and pepper oil dressing. Salads and carpacci ($10- $12) include a melt-in-your mouth cured pork with arugula and Gaeta olives in lemon fennel oil; and roasted beets and Italian tuna salad with beefsteak tomato, Italian tuna and red onion in balsamic dressing.

Pasta dishes ($14-$19) made in-house, include bucatini de cecco with wild boar ragout and shaved-aged ricotta; tortellini emiliani-perfectly cooked tender veal flavored with mushrooms, peas and prosciutto in a Reggiano cream sauce; and classic gnocchi of semolina and golden potato with buffalo mozzarella, cherry tomato sauce and fresh basil. Entrees include signature dishes such as braised oxtail in a rich tomato and Chianti wine sauce; marinated grilled Cornish hen with garlic, olives and fennel; and a flavorful wood oven roasted milk-fed piglet marinated with fresh herbs, juniper berries and black pepper. Authentic thin crusted pizza ($13-$18) with whole-wheat options includes the Angelo with mozzarella, Parma prosciutto, arugula and shaved Reggiano.

Traditional Roman desserts rotate daily from the in-house pastry chef and include rum - flavored baba made from rich sponge cake leavened and soaked in liquor syrup; and delizia al limone (lemon delight) a light Limoncello-filled cake with cream topping. An espresso, frothy cappuccino, or an after dinner Sicilian Averna liqueur is recommended to savor the end of the meal.

For D’Angelo Trattoria, architect Alfredo Leon transformed the 1920’s Delray cottage into a warm and inviting contemporary eatery. The 120-seat restaurant offers indoor seating, as well as al fresco dining on the front porch or lush back terrace. Rustic focal points are combined with modern finishing creating a cozy yet sophisticated ambiance. Espresso stained wood floors, limestone walls, a wood-burning copper oven and a bar replete with granite counters and a mosaic tiled backsplash complement each other perfectly. Modern pendant lamps, stainless globe lights and custom designed sconces emit a warm and subdued glow. Since fine Italian wine is a pivotal part of the D’Angelo dining experience, a special collection of reds and whites is on display in a temperature-controlled room with glass panels for easy viewing.

The restaurant offers complimentary valet and serves dinner nightly from Sunday - Thursday 5:30 p.m. - 11 p.m; Friday and Saturday from 5:30 p.m. – midnight. D’Angelo Trattoria is located at 9 SE 7th Avenue in Delray Beach just off Atlantic Avenue. All major credit cards are accepted.
