Insomnia Cookies is a small chain trying to bank in on our love for cookies, and having recently sampled just two of their flavors, I can put my stamp of approval on them. What is it about a cookie that brings out the kid in all of us? We decide to throw all caution to the wind and just indulge in something that will bring us memories of our childhood. Sure, there are some cookies that are better than others, but it is practically impossible for something made from butter, sugar, and (most of the time) chocolate to not be edible. Heck, there is a very familiar puppet monster dedicated to our love of the round confection. This puppet, known as “Cookie Monster,” is a recognizable pop culture figure known for feverishly devouring cookies in fits of incontrollable binging. But I personally cannot blame him, because behind doors I pretty much behave the same if there is a plate of cookies around.

This company offers a variety of classic flavors such as the ubiquitous Chocolate Chunk, Oatmeal Raisin, Snickerdoodle, and Sugar, along with more elaborate creations such as the S’mores cookie. You can go into the store and order them individually or in packs, or you can just go and create a dessert using the cookies. By adding ice cream, you can make an Ice Cream sandwich or Cookies a la mode. The real kicker about Insomnia Cookies is that they live up to their name in more ways than one. One way in which the word “Insomnia” lives up to their name is that they are open until 3 a.m, giving those suffering from lack of sleep (or just a late-night sweet tooth) the opportunity to satisfy their sugary-craving late at night. The other way is that they are willing to deliver to your location if your absolute love of cookies is driving you to fits of insomnia. Either way, I love the concept and feel like in a city known to run on very little sleep, it will be successful.

Everyone has a different standard for the perfect cookie, but in my eyes, Insomnia Cookies is offering some of the better cookies being sold. Tasting my way through a couple of the standard flavors, I was left feeling that Insomnia Cookies attempted to recreate the epitome of a cookie. They managed to achieve a cookie with crisp edges, a chewy center, and the right balance in flavors depending on the flavor. By not trying to reinvent the wheel, they have catered to the masses by bringing them no-nonsense desserts that will gratify their inner child. The Chocolate Chunk uses a brown butter base that tastes of butterscotch and caramel. The chocolate is fairly sweet, but not so much where it overpowers the base dough and it just adds to the experience. The chocolate is generously added to the dough, resulting in differently sized chunks that add a different texture and taste to every bite. The White Chocolate Macadamia is reminiscent of the cookie you would find at Subway, and I mean that as a good thing. I have been known to walk into Subway just to purchase a cookie (or four), so finding a better version is great. Once again, the chocolate does not overpower the dough and is generously applied, but what makes this cookie is the fact that the dough is not overly sweet and is only accentuated by the addition of the quality chocolate and macadamia nuts. The nuts are applied generously as well, evidenced by the 5 whole pieces that I found in my cookie.

I plan on making my way through Insomnia’s repertoire in the near future, but if everything they offer is as solid as the two cookies I recently sampled, I can say that I will be in for a treat.
