First Thoughts on Kush in Wynwood. If you're an avid fan of the Simpsons like I am, I am sure you have seen the episode in which Homer dreams about being in a land of chocolate, where every detail in the world is relating to chocolate, including all you can eat goodness. If you understand the characterization of Homer, you will know that this is his version of a perfect world. The feelings of delight and wonder you see in Homer's face throughout this little skit is exactly how I felt during my first experience in Kush, except that I see this as a utopia for beer.

Run by the same people who run Lokal in Coconut Grove, Kush is a concept that is trying to push the Miami beer scene to the next level. In this aspect, Matthew Kuscher and David Rodriguez more than succeed. I can very confidently claim that the beer list that they are providing to the Miami public is among the best beer selections I have witnessed anywhere in the country, let alone Miami. Here, you will have to choose from a selection of 18(!) taps plus a unique list of rare bottles. Choosing may be the hard part, but no matter what you choose, I guarantee you that it is something that the partners have put a lot of thought into putting on their menu. David, who is very passionate about his craft, runs the beer program. This passion and knowledge is something that the owners are trying very hard to instill in the people who will frequent their restaurants, as they appreciate beer as art. Along with the extensive beer list, you will find some an interesting menu that is a combination of items from LoKal plus a few new things. Selections such as the Johnny Utah (Burger with Pastrami) and the The Boss Hog (boar sausage sandwich) are making their way onto a menu already filled with all-stars such as the Frita by Kush and Alligator Bites. Although the menu is quite limited, Matt can assure you that everything on there will be the best you can find, seeing as he following his same principles on sourcing that he follows at his other restaurant.

The rare and well thought-out beer list and food menu is supported by some of the most visually stimulating restaurant decorations I have seen in a while. Art created by local artists is highlighted in a way that is reminiscent of years past while bringing a hip and modern feel to the small locale. It is very similar to LoKal in terms of decoration and ambiance except that this is a little bit more grown up and catering to the beer crowd. Just like Homer's world of chocolate, this beer wonderland does not let you forget exactly what you came here to do. There are hilarious quotes on the bar relating to why you should drink good beer, tables are made out of kegs, the restaurant's motto is very visible on a way adjacent to the logo, the menu is printed on brown paper bags in which people hold their beer cans, and everyone inside will be talking about how much their enjoying their brew. If you like craft beer, there is no doubt in my mind that you will enjoy Kush. I used to think that LoKal was a fine addition to a city that badly needed a place for aficionados to find the best beer in the area, but Kush is just pushing that notion to the next level.
