Tucked within the Freehand Miami Hostel, you can find the James Beard Award-nominated Broken Shaker. Led by master mixologists, this bar features handcrafted cocktails concocted with the use of specialty homemade syrups and infusions from garden herbs, exotic and local ingredients, and fresh produce. Thought is put into every single ingredient that goes into your drink, and although pricey, you will not feel like you are being overcharged as you sip away. Just to get a feel of the bar’s selection, look no further than the Little Miss Sunshine. Made with local Florida Kafir Limes and lemongrass grown right in the bar’s personal herb garden, this drink is then combined with Thai basil essence St. Germain and Wodka Vodka to create a refreshing ode to Miami’s produce and liveliness.

Variations on punches are changed daily, making the best of what the season is offering. On a current visit, I was fortunate enough to sample a punch made with rum, clove, citrus, and Banana, a combination of flavors that I would not even dream to put together in a drink. To my surprise, what The Broken Shaker offers is perfectly thought out and each ingredient stands on its own to create what may be one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting.

Recently, the Broken Shaker began offering food to accompany cocktails should you crave. The section on the menu titled “Eats and Treats” is actually on par with the cocktail menu, offering a quality and pride in ingredients that hints at how serious this deceptively simple bar is. Hummus served with Grilled Zak the Baker bread is the perfect accompaniment to the cocktails, giving you something to mindlessly snack on while you indulge in the drinks. While the Smoked St. Louis Ribs slathered with Panther Coffee BBQ sauce are something to look forward to, the Burger is something to stop here for on its own. This beast is a half-pound black angus beef patty topped with sharp cheddar, drunken onions, and house cured bacon on a toasted brioche bun. Although simple, it has a backyard grilled taste that is reminiscent of a family BBQ but with highly sourced ingredients. The bacon is thick and adds to the heft of the flavorful and succulent beef, making for a truly satisfying meal.

Whether you go to the Broken Shaker for the food or drinks, you are sure to have a great time. Great service combined with a friendly ambiance and affordable and delectable menu offerings make this a must stop during your stay in Miami. Just make sure you get there early, as news about this hotspot is starting to spread.
