Delices de France

If you’re looking for the finest and freshest croissants in Miami, one of the top contenders is bound to be Delices de France Bakery. Located in the Kingsbay Shopping Center near Palmetto Bay, this small bakery provides the area with French pastries akin to what you would find in the best bakeries in the country. I can’t claim to their authenticity seeing as I have never been to France, but from knowing what I know about what a croissant should be like, it definitely lives up to the archetypal picture that is painted about the aforementioned pastry.

As I’ve mentioned in my previous posts about searching for the best croissant in the city, a croissant should be buttery and flaky, having a crunchy exterior and tender and bready interior. Some bakeries try to pass up puff pastry shaped as croissant rolls as croissants, but they don’t understand that a croissant is actually a combination of layered dough with yeasted bread. You should be able to see the layers when you cut through the pastry, yet feel a bit of resistance caused by the gluten. Believe it or not, I have encountered croissants that are too buttery, leaving a grease-like film on the tongue. I’m not saying a croissant should be light tasting, but it should not overwhelm and make you feel heavy after eating it.

Delices de France provides the best croissant I have been able to get my hands on. They also offer different bakery selections such as quiches, brioche breads, muffins, baguettes, and so on. Everything I have tried has been exemplary, especially the Danishes and ham filled croissants. The cheese Danish uses the same laminated dough as the croissant but has a cream cheese center and is topped with a simple sugar glaze. The filled croissants are stuffed with a piece of black forest ham and swiss cheese, making for a small lunch or big snack. Since they both use the same dough that I believe is the prototypical dough for croissants, I am always a huge fan.

The owners and bakers are mostly French, leading to an authenticity factor. This can be a good and bad thing. The good thing is that all the things offered are of high quality and affordably priced, but the bad thing is the French service that comes along with this genuine food. The French service is not unpleasant per se, but it is quite cold and not too involved. Just like a typical French bakery, you are there to get your baked goods and walk out. This is further evidenced by the fact that there are not too many seats and tables available to dine in. Still, there are many loyal customers that have been coming here for years, which say much about the consistency in quality of what is being served. I don’t mind the less than stellar service, as the food is exemplary. I find myself returning on a regular basis and have even warmed up to the employees. They’ll never be as hospitable as other places, but the food is so good that I’m willing to settle for it.
