For the best eats this weekend has to offer, these are the restaurants we recommend.
South Floridians have been limited to three places to satiate a donut fix: Mojo Donuts, Krispy Kreme, and Dunkin’ Donuts. The problem is that Mojo seems to be far for most of us and they close when they run out, Krispy Kreme does not have too many locations in the area, and Dunkin’ Donuts is downright lacking in quality. Athan Prakas and businessman Davin Tran noticed this lack in high-quality donut shops in South Florida, which is why they decided to open Rhino Doughnuts and Coffee. What Rhino brings to the table is what foodies have been waiting for in a donut shop. Here, you can find donuts prepared fresh in-house with only the best ingredients and presented in an artful approach. On June 17th, Rhino be giving away free doughnuts all day long in honor of the grand opening of our Lauderdale-by-the-Sea location. Whether you come for the simple, albeit delicious, glazed ($1.39) or the complex maple bacon ($1.99), you cannot go wrong. Rhino will change your perception of what a doughnut shop should be by offering an experience rather than just sweet treats for the masses. The head donut chef is a Smith & Wollensky, Philippe Chow, and Boca Resort alum, making everything from scratch.

June marks Barley and Swine’s one-year anniversary, and they are not letting the occasion pass unnoticed. Owner Jorge Ramos thought about how to mark this major occurrence, and instead of having a dinner with select diners or making a special birthday meal, this a neighborhood gastropub located in Miami’s up and coming Downtown Dadeland is offering $4 craft beers all month long. To Barley and Swine, it’s more about celebrating with ALL the local and loyal patrons than selecting just a few exclusive people for one night. This gives you even more reason to come any night of the week. Tuesdays mark a sandwich bar pop-up and $10 burgers, Wednesdays are half-priced bottles of wine just because, and if that’s not enough, just come to sample some of the best Mac n Cheese selection in the city. The special Mac n Cheese changes daily, with selections ranging from Beer Cheese and Pork Belly to Goat Cheese, Figs, and Walnuts.

Although the weather may make you disagree, we haven’t even begun summer yet. That is, until June 21. This Saturday marks the first official day of the season, and what better way than to celebrate the sweltering heat and upcoming beach days than with the perfect summer food. You may be asking what the perfect summer food is, and I am here to tell you the answer… ICE CREAM. Nothing screams summer like a refreshing, creamy scoop of ice cream atop a waffle cone, and Azucar Ice Cream is where you need to go for one. They take inspiration from Hispanic desserts and exotic fruits to create whimsical flavors that just scream out everything Miami. You will experience flavors like the Abuela Maria, a flavor Azucar calls a Cuban classic. This ice cream features premium “vanilla ice cream mixed with bright jewels of ruby red guava, rich cream cheese and crispy, sweet galletas Maria.” So grab a scoop or two, indulge in the surrounding atmosphere, and refresh yourself from what is sure to be a very hot summer.

You need to take as much advantage of Coral Gables Restaurant Week as possible, and this week’s recommendation is for Fritz and Franz Bierhaus. This restaurant offers authentic German dining with a menu lined with various sausages, sauerkraut, spatzle, and goulash. Go for the event menu ($26), where you will have the choice of tomato salad or pea cream soup as an appetizer, Jagerschnitzel or Entrcote for entrée, and apple strudel or chocolate cake as dessert. You can’t go wrong with any choice, but we highly urge you to get the Jagerschnitzel as your entrée. This sautéed pork scaloppini is doused in a creamy mushroom-bacon sauce and is served with homemade spatzel, a German pasta. Even if you’re looking for a good time, come to Fritz and Franz, as they offer one of the liveliest destinations to watch the ongoing World Cup. It is always a viewing party, and their large selection of beers makes for an entertaining afternoon.

Led by former Scarpetta chef Michael Pirolo, Macchialina is a casual Italian hotspot inspired by bold and seasonal cooking. This is a no-frills type of upscale restaurant serving classic fare such as creamy polenta with sausage ragu ($14) and spaghetti all’amatriciana with guanciale and pecorino ($21). The wine is reasonably priced, helping make a neighborhood spot with a energetic and easy going vibe. This Thursday features Macchialina’s second-ever bar takeover, and this Rob Ferrara takeover is Jersey Shore themed. You read that right, a gym-tan-laundry-inspired takeover in which you are actually encouraged to get your “guido” on. Join them for $10 cocktails and Jersey Boardwalk specials from 11pm – 2am. Even if channeling your inner Snooki is not your thing, swing by anytime to Macchialina for what many consider to be the best Italian food in the city.
