Right in the center of Wynwood, you can find a small, tiny store with an outdoor mural depicting bunnies happily prancing around. This change from the graffiti found around the area may come as a surprise, since most art around the neighborhood is usually themed around pop culture. Once you see the overhead storefront sign reading "Bunnie Cakes," you will understand what the deal is with the decoration and casually find your way inside. Walking in through the door at Bunnie Cakes, a scent of freshly baked pastries immediately attacks your senses and your eyes begin to peruse the cupcakes and other food offerings behind the display cases. The case is divided into two sections: vegan and gluten-free. During my most recent visit, I was given the opportunity of tasting most of the vegan cupcake selection, and I walked away impressed. Although some cupcakes are more successful than others, I thoroughly enjoyed everything that I sampled.
Not only are the cupcakes superb for being vegan, they are just downright good. The texture of the cake itself is always moist and the flavors taste natural. The buttercream used to top the individual cakes follow suit, and you can tell that this store is using nothing but the best ingredients. Every single cupcake is topped with a small fondant heart, which is said to represent how the bakers and owner put their heart into every single treat that they provide. The flavors offered range from the standard vanilla and chocolate to the more exotic guava and passionfruit. Although all the cupcakes were delectable, I found myself going back to the chocolate coconut. They take extra care in toasting the coconut, which provides a subtly smokey flavor and crunch. The chocolate cake itself is somewhat bitter but not enough to be a turnoff. Instead, it provides a nice contrast to the sweetness coming from the buttercream being used. The other cupcake I enjoyed was the Dulce No Leche, which is their take on a caramel cupcake. The fact that this cupcake is properly executed without using milk is quite impressive. The caramel sauce swirled on top was my favorite part, as it was impossibly buttery and decadent.
Overall, I left feeling like Bunnie Cakes belonged in Wynwood along with the exceptional food that has been appearing as of late. They have appeared on Food Network's Cupcake Wars, and I believe that they deserved it. Not only am I glad that they are providing the area with desserts, I also appreciate that they cater to those who have dietary restrictions.
