Right when I set foot into Baru Urbano , I knew I would end up regretting my decision by the end of the evening. I understand that people come here to party and have a good time, but on a gastronomic level, there is nothing here that attracted me to come again. For a Colombian-esque night out, it is fine, but everything else is just lacking.
Let me begin with the drinks. I’m just going to go out on a limb and claim that the drinks that I encountered at Baru Urbano during my current visit where some of the worst cocktails I have ever tasted. Even getting them during happy hour, I felt like I did not get my money’s worth whatsoever. Apart from being massively overpriced, the drinks are served warm, watered down, and overall lacking in flavor. My mojito tasted like a dirty oversaturated simple syrup lacking in citrus and mint flavor. The overwhelming sweetness made it almost impossible to drink, and the alcohol was nowhere to be found.
The menu is similar to what you would find in a typical Colombian restaurant with dishes ranging from empanadas for appetizers to Bandeja Paisa for entrée. Everything that I was able to sample was substandard, but the dish that caught my attention most was the Chivito. This sandwich featuring steak, bacon, cheese, and an egg on a sturdy bun somehow managed to be dry and lacking in flavor despite all the fat-laden ingredients. The steak itself was overcooked to the point of being quite rubbery and the cheese only acted to keep everything together instead of adding flavor. What remains a mystery to me is how Baru Urbano managed to give me bacon that was dry and limp at the same time, resulting in an off-putting product that I actually had to remove from the sandwich to be able to finish it. The fries served with the sandwich were the typical frozen kind and were probably the most edible thing on the plate. For $14, this sandwich was a bit of a rip-off.
It may be unfair to judge Baru Urbano since they are more of a late night dancing joint, but I qualify my review with the idea that if you offer food, you should stand by your product and provide menu items that bring you pride. Sadly, I would never eat anything from here again. I rather wait until my group is done partying and head to someplace nearby.
