In know, know, Miami doesn't have great Asian cuisine at prices that are not ridiculously expensive, at least not many options are available when it comes to Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese (although I am due to pay a visit to a new Vietnamese restaurant that just opened up in downtown Miami). Unless you are ready to leave half your mortgage payment on a decent Asian inspired dinner (like at Mr. Chow), your selection for great Asian cuisine is very narrow.

Tom kha kai soup

I never go to Coral Gables, only lately as I have appointments there twice a month so I decided to do some restaurant hopping (like hop-on, hop-off but with restaurants and walking), so I started at  Seasons 52 (oh lord, this review will come later), and then I stopped at Red Koi. I was kind of full already but I am always up for a good Tom kha kai soup - and oh boy this one was the worst Tom kha kai  soup I have ever had in my entire life, and believe me, after living in San Francisco for more than a decade, I have a good grasp of what is a decent Tom kha kai.

This soup was so heavy it was like drinking liquid candy. The sweetness obviously came from the coconut milk but how they thickened the milk to be as heavy as syrup will forever remain a mystery. So, bummed out by the heaviness of this unappetizing soup I desperately tried to find relief on the mushrooms and chicken floating like desperate islands on top. Well, the mushrooms were the canned ones and unfortunately the chicken, oh boy, it did not taste like chicken, it just simply tasted like nothing.

As you can expect I did not dare to inject liquid candy to a point of a sugar comma so I left it. The waitress, a young attentive girl did not ask me why I did not had my soup which at the end of the day it was the only dish I ordered. I ask for the check, I got the check, I walked away.
