Aromas Del Perú is quite an intriguing place. I say that because even if the surroundings are quite cozy and welcoming, they are not exactly upscale, the decor can even be described as on the shabby-rustic side. The food that arrives at the table though, with a luxurious amount of seafood, does leave you stunned. The aromas and colors captivated my senses. This time my dining companion was Mr. G.
We had the Ceviche de Pescado - a dish of small, raw chunks of fish seasoned and marinated in citrus juice. It was served with Peruvian Corn (choclo) and sweet potatoes . The marinated fish was bathed with red onions and cilantro, and the taste was fresh & vibrant. There is a peculiar addition to this photo which is the big slice of red pepper, not a usual part of a Peruvian ceviche. I think they put the pepper on top because they saw that I was taking pictures and they wanted to add some more red color to the plate. Can’t blame them, I think it was a brilliant idea, even if the fish is buried under the pepper and onions 🙂 At $11.95, it is a good deal for a fresh, piquant and shareable dish.
Papa a La Huancaina was our next taste, which are baked potatoes covered with a mild creamy, slightly spicy cheese sauce garnished with a thinly sliced of boiled egg, a sliver of red pepper and a shiny black olive. Need I say more? Pure comfort food for $5.50.
Jalea is got to be one of my favorite dishes at Aromas Del Peru. It is a mountain of fried seafood served with cassava and a delicate onion sauce. This delight includes calamari, mussels, chunky pieces of grouper and shrimps. The sauce consists of red onions, corn, cilantro , lime juice and a touch of tomatoes. This is a main dish but I habitually order this to share as it is huge, and I order it as an appetizer. Fried food can tend to be heavy, but not in this case: the batter is pleasing, golden and light. It is a little on the pricey side though, $16.95, but it is seafood after all.
Lomo Saltado is another typically Peruvian dish that still baffles me. It is basically beef strips sauteed with onions and tomatoes and served with rice and french fries. The first time I saw this dish I asked myself: What are the fries doing all mixed up with the gravy and the beef? Who would want to eat wet french fries? I was frankly a little hesitant to try it but my bravery paid off as mixing the fries with everything else is pure genius. This dish is filling, exotic and everyday at the same time. For $9.99, this portion can easily be shared by two diners.
Aromas del Perú is definitely worth a visit. They are 3 locations in Miami but I frequent the one in Kendall the most as it is the closest to my house. It is family-friendly and can be a tad loud at times but to me that means that it is pleasant place to gather and savor great food.
