Middle East Middle East Iconic Dish – Shawarma

Hummus, Babaganoush, and kibbeh are common Middle Eastern dishes, but shawarma is our favorite. Shawarma is similar to Mexico’s al pastor, where meat is placed on a spit and cooked over low heat through constant rotation. Shavings are cut off the block of meat for serving, and the remainder of the block of meat is kept heated on the rotating spit. Shawarma is typically served in a pita, topped with tomato, cucumber, hummus, tzatziki, and tabbouleh. Although not technically a country, Middle Eastern cuisine encompasses food from countries with similar diets thanks to similarities in environments, cultures, and religions. Popular ingredients include olives, pita, chickpeas, eggplant, sesame seeds, parsley, and lamb. Since the area is so historic, it has influenced most (if not all) cuisines throughout the world.
