With some of the hottest restaurants in Miami opening in neighborhoods once considered off the beaten path – Wynwood, Design District and the Biscayne Corridor – it’s easy to forget how groundbreaking the debut of Michy’s was in 2006. Owned and operated by Chef Michelle Bernstein and her husband/partner David Martinez, Michy’s – 6927 Biscayne Boulevard – signaled the arrival of a major chef talent on the Corridor and paved the way for the many restaurants that have come in the decade since.
“We always conceived of the restaurant as a neighborhood spot,” says Bernstein, who shuttered, redesigned and relaunched the restaurant as CENA by Michy in 2015. “The restaurant is blocks from our house and the kind of spot we wanted and needed in our neighborhood. It’s been amazing to watch the area grow around us.” To celebrate this milestone, Bernstein and Martinez will bring back some of Michy’s standout alums – for one night, under one roof - and past signature menu items sure to please CENA devotees and Miami gastronomes.
On Wednesday, April 6, at 7PM, Bernstein will welcome a cavalcade of local food & beverage luminaries for a dinner celebrating all-things-Michy. To help celebrate her delicious decade, guest chefs Lindsay Autry, Timon Balloo, Jason Schaan, Berenice de Araujo and Sarah Sipe – all alums – will join Bernstein and CENA by Michy chef de cuisine Mikey Mayta for a not-to-be-missed five- course dinner paired with wines by former Michy’s sommelier Allegra Angelo. Master mixologist Julio Cabrera, who helped make Bernstein’s Sra. Martinez one of the hottest cocktail spots in the country, will return and serve two special cocktails so attendees can toast in style. The paired wine dinner is priced at $150 per person (plus tax and gratuity).
Finally, every night from Thursday, March 31 – Saturday, April 9, CENA by Michy will feature a different menu special pulled from the restaurant’s history books. Infamous dishes – one a night for ten nights – will vary and will not be repeated, though social media followers might get advance word of what to expect. It’s a rare chance to enjoy a Bernstein classic that has long been benched, from conch escargot style and Michy’s bouillabaisse to her killer carbonara. “Some of these dishes have been enjoying retirement,” Bernstein quips, “though people ask for them regularly. It’ll be nice to bring them out for the night.”
After much anticipation, Chef Michelle Bernstein’s MiMO landmark Michy’s reopened as CENA by Michy in May 2015. The newly renovated neighborhood restaurant features an adventurous yet approachable menu of soulful creations inspired by Bernstein’s current culinary obsessions, served in a rustic yet sophisticated setting. CENA by Michy reaffirms the spirit of communal dining that was one of the signature features of the restaurant’s earlier incarnation with a menu that offers a cornucopia of small plates. In addition to a European and Mediterranean-centric wine list, CENA offers a full bar – a centerpiece of the restaurant’s redesign – serving innovative takes on classic cocktails as well as signature libations.
Tickets for the alumni dinner must be purchased in advance through Resy.
