Holbox, Mexico (July 17, 2012) – The small island of Holbox, one of Mexico’s best kept secrets, will launch the First Gastronomic Festival from August 30 to September 3, celebrating the region’s top-notch chefs and fine dining options.
Organized by the Island of Holbox Restaurant Association, the Festival will draw locals and tourists to the small Mexican Caribbean Island located just northwest of Cancun. Guests can admire the striking natural scenery of Holbox as they stroll down the sandy streets lined with picturesque Caribbean-style houses and sample the great restaurants.
“Holbox is one of the few places where you can still find peace and tranquility, together with art and amazingly good food,” said Denisse de Kalafe, president of the I.H. Restaurant Association.
Just 26 miles long and separated from the mainland of Mexico by a shallow lagoon, Holbox is considered to have some of the finest restaurants along the coast with diversified culinary options from Mexican to International fare.

Tourists who purchase individual packages with any of the agencies promoting the festival will receive a delicious lunch and three-course dinner, which includes dessert, at any of the 25 participating restaurants for just $36.
It’s hard to believe a tiny tropical island has more than 25 restaurants, but Holbox chefs are distinguished for their tempting – and unique – specialty dishes, which include lobster pizza, crust pastor mushroom casserole, and stuffed squid.
Part of what makes seafood in Holbox such a specialty is its freshness. Most of the people of Holbox Island make their living from fishing and you’ll often see fishermen walking through the village carrying nets with their catch of the day.
Holbox, a paradise unspoiled by tourism, features white-sand beaches and calm, crystalline waters that blend with the horizon on this little island populated by exotic species of flora and fauna. Holbox is also perfectly situated near three islands: Yalahau, Passion Island; and Bird Island or Isla Morena.

On September 2, one of the best Salsa bands in the Caribbean will bring the First Holbox Gastronomic Festival to a close in the town square as six chefs with the best dishes receive the honorary “Golden Fork Award.”
