The mystery of Buns & Buns finally unfolds as the restaurant prepares to officially open its doors to the public today, Monday, January 27, 2014. The highly-anticipated, over-the-counter concept will offer a globally-dynamic menu with a focus on freshly baked breads and buns, an exotic blend of handcrafted sauces and spices, and a premium selection of meat, vegetable and seafood dishes.
The ingredient-driven menu, inspired by the world travels of the innovative team behind the concept, will boast fine dining cuisine at an accessible price, with made-to-order dishes. Foodies will be able to customize their meals by mixing and matching Breads & Buns with savory Grills, sharing in the adventurous spirit of the restaurant.
The culinary journey begins with the diner’s choice of freshly baked Breads & Buns including focaccia with roasted red peppers; a warm pretzel bun; authentic Asian steamed bun; and perfectly prepared ciabatta roll. To pair with the hearty assortment of baked goods, appetizing Grills – ranging from $10 to $25 – include savory chicken thigh ($10) with a dark beer and black bean jus; potatoes ($10) served with a queso blanco sauce; divine pork belly ($15) finished with bourbon glaze; tasty cobia ($15) with miso, soy and scallions; perfectly cooked ribeye ($20) with a zesty aji panca sauce and pickled turnips; and succulent lobster tail ($25) served over melted leeks with yuzu butter and topped with candied orange zest. A welcome addition to any meal, unique Munchies are all $5 and include the delectable cheesy bites with Espelette pepper; spinach poofs with tahini, olive oil and chives; eggplant chips with yogurt and citrus-plum honey; and clams with parsley, garlic and olive oil.
Those interested in lighter fare can customize one of the many refreshing house salads, starting at $10, with choice of chicken, steak or shrimp. Made with only local and seasonal ingredients power-packed salads including the roasted heirloom tomato combining greens with burrata, avocado, watermelon and a light vinegar dressing; while the nappa cabbage salad is topped with crispy wontons and is made with watercress, chives, avocado, tomato, cucumber and topped with a mustard vinaigrette. For dessert, foodies can choose from one of the six tantalizing offerings, all ($8), which include gooey hot chocolate buns served with a trio of dipping sauces – dark chocolate, raspberry-pomegranate and vanilla cream; the decadent la chocolatin, a warm chocolate cake with dark chocolate crunch, caramel cremeux, brown sugar meringitos and topped with vanilla ice cream; and coco pabana – coconut mousse, hazelnut-caramel crisp, passion fruit, banana, mango, roasted pineapple and vanilla.
A wide selection of local and regional craft beers on tap and wines by the glass are available. Beers on draft ($5) include Magic Hat #9; La Rubia Blonde Ale; Funky Buddha and Jai-Alai IPA, among others. Ciders ($12) include strawberry lime; pear; and wild berry.
The intricate, rustic décor reflects the quick-witted nature of the concept and its sense of whimsy and adventure. Walls are lined with white brick and souvenirs brought back from the team’s world tour. Guests can sit at one of the many wooden tabletops or take a seat at the Chef’s Bar which showcases the artistry of the brilliant chef’s at work. The open kitchen and intimate, cozy ambiance is warm and inviting while still evoking a lively vibe.
Buns & Buns is located across from the Shops at Sunset Place at 5748 Sunset Drive. The restaurant is open for dinner at 6 p.m. nightly. Ample metered street parking is available.
