On Wednesday, April 6, 2016, Whole Foods Market Miami metro stores will donate five percent of the day’s net sales to fund the Miami Science Barge – a floating urban ecological laboratory and public environmental education center – powered by renewable energy. In honor of Earth Month, all six Miami Whole Foods Market locations (Aventura, Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, North Miami, Pinecrest and South Beach) will participate in the exciting project designed to catalyze local efforts to build a sustainable Miami. The Miami metro 5 percent day comes just in time for the Miami Science Barge’s opening date – Tuesday, April 19, 2016 in Museum Park.
“We are proud to join together in support of the Miami Science Barge as we see it as a cutting edge learning center for Miamians,” said Lauren Belinsky, Whole Foods Market Marketing Field Associate. “Miami Science Barge gives the community a chance to get up close and personal to our local environmental issues and solutions and we are passionate about advancing environmental stewardship. We encourage everyone to visit the barge to explore all of the exhibits, especially the zero waste urban farm system that utilizes the newest aquaponics and hydroponic technologies that will bear Whole Foods Market’s name at the entrance.”
On Wednesday, April 6, 2015, Miami Science Barge crew members will be on-site at each Miami Whole Foods location with an eco-activity and information to share with shoppers. As a thank you, Miami Science Barge will be offering a special tour program exclusively to Whole Foods Market shoppers who stop by their table. The crews will be in stores from noon to 7PM. The partnership is part of Whole Foods Market’s 5 Percent Day, in which stores donate 5 percent of their day’s net sales to a local educational or nonprofit organization.
“We are thrilled to partner with Whole Foods Market because we share the goal of building a more sustainable food system to provide healthy options for our communities,” said Nathalie Manzano-Smith, Director of the Miami Science Barge.
“The food systems on the barge showcase ways we can save water, land and energy while still meeting our city’s needs and boosting the economy,” added Dr. Ted Caplow, Designer of the barge and CEO of parent company CappSci.
