HIGHLIGHTS

Learn about the history of how the Haitian people came to Miami and how that has influenced the Miami culinary landscape. We will go to a family run restaurant that has been celebrated for almost 30 years in this neighborhood. Enjoy two stewed dishes that speak highly to the common aspects of caribbean cuisine. One, a conch dish called “Lambi” which is a slowly cooked stew that is bright in flavors and a Kreyol Stew that braises the meats for long periods of time with the vegetables of the island.

Visit a restaurant that is considered the King of Caribbean Cuisine that specializes in traditional Bahamian & Creole Dishes. Snack on fried pork bites called “Griot” which is a staple in almost any caribbean home pair that with a spicy cabbage, carrot and chile-laced pickle, called “Pikliz” which is pronounced pick-lees, traditionally served with rich meats and fried foods.

Partake in the magic of Jamaica as we explore the many different facets of this wonderful island. Sway with the sounds of the caribbean as reggae plays in the background, hear  the stories of its rich history and dive into one of their most popular dishes amongst their faithful followers, Curry Goat. This dish is the flavor of Jamaica and made mostly for celebrations, wash this all down with a refreshing glass of refreshing coconut water.

STORYTELLING TIME

While driving to each stop we will uncover the art scene of Little Haiti and learn about famous Haitian artists such as Serge Toussaint and Edouard Duval-Carrié. We will showcase massive murals and learn about each unique aspect of their work.

Envelop yourself in the rich history of religion of the caribbean islands. We will explore one of the most trusted botanica which is a combination of a retail store, a pharmacy and a place of religious significance. Learn more about Voodoo, which is actually a segment founded from the Catholic religion. Discover how these religions are an important part of everyday life in Haiti and here in own backyard.

Explore the epicenter for the language of Haitian Creole in Miami, a bookstore that has been standing in Little Haiti since 1990. This refuge for haitian/caribbean books has made a significant impact on the community. The owner, a fervent defender of his native language built this storefront as a place of education to keep the Haitian culture and language of Haitian Creole alive. We will taste Cremasse, the most famous Haitian alcoholic beverage while enjoying the art and literature all around us.

Walk into a bakery that is known to have a line out the door every weekend selling the freshest and authentic caribbean breads, meat patties and sweet desserts in all of Little Haiti. Dive deeper into Haitian pastries and breads and learn about its history, while enjoying a beef pate or “patty” as we call them in the States.

Enjoy dessert the only way a Caribbean local can, with a cookie called “Kokonet” These coconut treats are light and delicious and packed with coconut flavor. This is a perfect bite for the end of our adventure throughout the fascinating world of our beloved Little Haiti.
