One of our tour guides did a quick trip to New York and she was able to take a tour from Foods of NY tours. She loved the tour and below is the countdown:
1. Joe’s Pizza – traditional New York style pizza
2. Italian meatballs made with veal, beef and pork mince – very nice (I didn’t get the name, but it was only a few shops over from Joe’s)
3. O&Co. to sample two slices of bread (from a well know bread shop), one with their speciality Extra Virgin Olive Oil and the other with a honey with white truffle salt sprinkled on top. It was a nice informative addition, as the shop spoke for five to seven minutes on interesting facts about olive oils. It looked like everyone really enjoyed it!
4. We were taken down a small side street and told of some interesting history and restaurants of the street, including tips on where to hear underground local live music. The guide also mentioned some celebrity hot spots on the street.
5. Murray’s cheese shop – known to be one of the best cheese shops in the country. We had a few minutes to browse hundreds of varieties of cheese and antipasti items. The guide gave us a great story on the place with a platter cheeses (cow, sheep, goat), marinated olives and a cheese bread stick. Everyone learnt something new and the selections were memorable.
6. Then we went for a sit down at a local chic restaurant Centro Vinoteca. Wine was offered as an option to the gourmet three piece taster. On the tasting plate was a mushroom stuffed with fontina cheese and almond, Gorgonzola stuffed inside a date wrapped in bacon, alongside a fresh marinated artichoke. This was a great stop because the chef used a diverse balance of flavors in each piece.
7. The next stop was very close, (at this point we had only walked about three blocks) we ate Milk and Cookies famous milk chocolate cookie. A large, warm and delicious cookie.
8. We walked through the affluent West Village and spoke of the history, celebrity homes and off Broadway theatres. Fascinating and useful knowledge.
9. We walked back to Bleecker Street to try another pizza, it was a completely different style of Pizza to Joe’s.
10. The last stop was dessert, a traditional Italian cannoli. It was very good. The guide explained the best cannoli’s are pipped after ordering so the dough doesn’t become soggy.
She ended up saying “I spoke with some of the group and she mentioned that it was clear that everyone really enjoyed the tour! I would highly recommend it for anyone heading to New York wanting to learn some interesting history and try a variety of the local foods. The guide was informative, pleasant and seemed genuinely interested in people. After twelve years of running these tours it’s no wonder that they are run so flawlessly! Thank-you for making my short trip to New York so memorable!”
