An Italian Summer Holiday for Food Lovers

Portofino Coal Fired Pizza Debuts New Summer Menu

Coal fired pizza may be the draw at Portofino, but this popular South Florida restaurant keeps families coming back by adding new specials to the menu every few months. Case in point—an exciting new menu for the season that evokes an Italian Summer Holiday.

As fresh as morning breezes at its namesake coastal village on the Italian Riviera, a new Strawberry Pecan Summer Salad opens Portofino’s summer menu. A bed of fresh greens gets topped with red-ripe berries and crunchy nuts. To slake that summer thirst, stick with fresh fruits and choose one of Portofino’s brightly sweet Summertime Ice Teas. Choose from peach, mango or raspberry.

The distinctive smoky flavors that come from coal-fired ovens can also tone-up pork spare ribs with surprise flavors. At Portofino, the Coal Fired Rib Stack is marinated, smoked to perfection and served with BBQ sauce, grilled onions and focaccia. You can smell the goodness before you dig in. The chefs also perfected a new Chicken Parmigiana. A lightly breaded chicken breast is pan fried, topped with mozzarella cheese and Marinara sauce, then served beside spaghetti topped by more sauce.

Just an appetizer tonight? The new Buffalo Chicken Sliders top crispy pizza crusts with shredded chicken marinated in Buffalo sauce. On the side, Blue cheese dressing with celery sticks for dipping. Breaded Cheese Ravioli is new, too. These pasta pillows are stuffed with seasoned cheeses and served with a lusty Marinara sauce for dipping. A local favorite is Fried Mac & Cheese Balls. They’re rolled in panko crumbs, deep-fried and served with an Alfredo sauce.

Portofino’s fans on Facebook recently got an exclusive sneak peak at the new summer menu during a social media competition produced by the restaurant. BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza made its debut. The luscious meat is topped with caramelized onions and red onion then dressed with smoky BBQ sauce, cilantro, mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Restaurant fans have spoken and two popular pizzas are now on the permanent Classic Menu—Veggie Extravaganza and Coal Fired BBQ Chicken. That menu also includes Portofino Churrasco and Seafood Fra Diavolo.

The tooth likes a sweet or two, even in summer, and Portofino aims to please. Try the creamy Italian custard known as Panna Cotta. It’s silky. It’s smooth. And it’s topped with fresh strawberry and mint atop Dulce de Leche sauce. If chocolate is your weakness, surrender to Portofino’s Chocolate Lava Cookie & Ice Cream. Hot fudge in a warm chocolate chip cookie gets a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. They all get topped with chocolate sauce and chocolate shavings. Give in. You can be strong tomorrow.

Portofino Coal Fired Pizza is locally owned and operated at two locations in South Florida. In Kendall, just east of Turnpike Exit #20 at 11535 N. Kendall Drive, and in Homestead on Campbell Drive, one block west of Turnpike Exit #2 at 650 N.E. 22nd Terrace.
