Tag: Marinara Sauce

Attached to the Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove , Spartico is a cozy and pretty restaurant, enveloped by the sounds of the fountains just outside the terrace…

Spartico has a pleasant atmosphere that makes you feel relaxed as soon as you enter. You are welcomed with smiles, warmth and the smell of Roman-style pizzas cooking in a wood-burning oven.

The House Garlic Bread ($5.95)

The first thing we tasted was the bread and it was crispy and delicious and cooked in the same wood-burning oven as the pizzas.

Fritto Misto ($10.95)

This was an unusual combination of crisp fried calamari and fried zucchini. Must confess that I have never had this combo before. Crisp & golden brown, it was served with two sauces: Aïoli & Spicy Pomodoro Sauce. The crunchiness of the calamari and zucchini were nicely complimented by the aïoli and the heat of the bright-red tomato sauce that was sprinkled generously with red pepper flakes. Aïoli is a tangy emulsified Mediterranean sauce similar to mayonnaise but made with olive oil instead of vegetable oil. A good shot of garlic gives aïoli its punch and a great injection of flavor and it was really good with the fritto misto.

Wood-Roasted Vegetables ($7.95)

Eggplant, Parsnips, Cauliflower & Squash dressed with Parsley Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil was presented to us next. The flavor was mild and not very exciting but it was totally healthy for sure.

Organic Chicken Parmigiana with a side of Spaghetti Pomodoro ($16.95)

Prepared with light seasoned breading & baked with Spartico Marinara Sauce, Fresh Local Mozzarella & Grana Parmigiano Cheese

The presentation was a bit sloppy and the Chicken Parmigiana was way too “soupy”, practically drowning in the Marinara Sauce. The Spaghetti was nice though, prepared with San Marzano Tomato Sauce & Local Organic Basil.

Breast of Chicken Limone ($15.95)

Organic Chicken Breast sautéed with Lemon & Capers served with steamed California Spinach. I liked this dish for its simplicity and the spinach was quite amazing and fresh.

Spartico has a reputation for serving excellent pizzas. They even offer Pizza classes with Chef Jonathan Eismann, which is a fun event to be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. They also have an extensive wine list that offers a variety of wines that pair well with your meal to make your experience more enjoyable.

The main concept at Spartico is to use fresh and seasonal ingredients for all their dishes. The service was outstanding but the food we tasted was average at best. We did not try the pizzas but if pizzas are their forté, we have to go back to try them for sure.
