Akashi Japanese Restaurant is an overlooked treasure out in South Miami. Located right next to Sunset Mall, this little establishment offers fresh sushi made right in the same room. I’ve been going to Sunset Mall all my life and it wasn’t till a few weeks ago that I started going there. I cannot express how much I love sushi. To me, sushi is like pizza; no matter how bad the pizza is, it’s still pizza. I try to look for authentic (and most importantly, affordable) sushi anywhere in Miami, but I know if I head out east towards the beach, prices are going to rise. But at Akashi, you get top quality sushi and at very fair pricing.
Entering Akashi, there’s no official hostess that offers seating but the waiters themselves greet you and ask you sit anywhere you like. This place is very small, with booth seating against opposite walls and approximately six high chairs for the bar. If you decide to sit at the bar, you can see the sushi chefs make the rolls right in front of you. I went during the week after work, and it was surprisingly empty. We were seated immediately and the waiter was very attentive.
I pride myself that I’ve tried some weird sushi. I have had sushi with mango in it; with chicken; another one had plantains; and one had ketchup. Like the saying goes, variety is the spice of life. But in this case, simplicity is the best. Their renown roll, Alex #2, is just simply amazing. The reason why I love sushi is because it combines simple ingredients like shrimp or asparagus into a delicious bite. Anyway, this roll is all about that theory. The Alex #2 roll is made with shrimp tempura, crab salad, masago, cream cheese, topped with avocado, spicy mayo, eel sauce and a type of crunch flakes. Dreams are made of this. I have tried their other basic rolls like the Spider roll, or their Jennifer roll (crab salad roll with cream cheese
topped with salmon); both are good, but the Alex #2 always beckons me. At this point I don’t bother to peruse the menu anymore; I order my miso dressing salad, and my roll.
I definitely recommend this place, especially the Alex #2 roll. Also, ask for extra eel sauce on the side!
