The time has come for me to declare that Bulla Gastrobar has become my go-to restaurant in the Gables. It’s the place I know I can rely on for a great drink, delicious food and a chic yet laid back atmosphere. I had never been to Por Fin, the owner’s previous and more elegant restaurant at this location, but hear that the similarities are evident. What drew me to Bulla (pronounced boo-ya, not bull-ah) was the concept; a casual spot to share some of Spain’s well known tapas and libations with friends.
After living in Madrid, I regularly crave patatas bravas, Serrano ham, croquettes, Manchego cheese and red wine. Order all of those at Bulla, but don’t miss out on some of their more unique offerings. Bulla has introduced me to my new favorite happy hour and weekend afternoon drink: sangria de cerveza. That’s right, beer sangria. Mixing crisp Ommegang Witte, triple sec, lemon juice and pear puree, it’s an indescribably refreshing way to unwind. Their red and white sangria are pretty delicious too, just make sure to order a pitcher. Not only is it a better value, but everyone will want (and needs) to try them.
When it comes to food, do not leave without ordering Huevos Bulla, the restaurant’s signature dish and perhaps the most addicting. Homemade potato chips topped with Serrano ham, a fried egg (that becomes a runny egg with one cut of your knife), potato foam and truffle oil. It’s as indulgent as it sounds. In true Spanish fashion, they also have a rotating daily menu with specials that range from savory flat breads of cured sausages and peppers, to aromatic fish dishes and fresh chorizo. In all honesty, I have never had a bite that disappoints.
This is a go-to spot for Coral Gables workers so you’ll find people spilling onto the sidewalks when happy hour rolls around and they offer half-priced drinks. If possible, ditch the wraparound bar downstairs and ask if there is any seating available upstairs on their open-air patio. There, you’ll find cozy loveseats, low-top tables and the nicest terrace in the entire neighborhood.
I may no longer be living in Spain, but Bulla gives me a way to revisit the flavors of a country I grew to love and for that reason, I keep coming back.
