The Federal restaurant Gets Campy for Summer with Nostalgic Backyard BBQ-Themed Sunday Night Soiree, Hosted by Husband and Wife Owners Cesar Zapata and Aniece Meinhold
In an effort to kick their feet up, relax and truly enjoy the sweltering Miami summer, the hubby and wife team behind The Federal, Food, Drink & Provisions, are hosting a casual and campy weekly Sunday Night Soiree dubbed Solo Cup Sundays, beginning officially June 8 at 6:00 p.m. Reminiscent of a crafty friend’s backyard barbeque-themed summer get-together, Solo Cup Sundays brings folks to join Zapata and Meinhold (who are spending the evening on the other side of the service desk) to grab their own drinks from provided punch bowls, scarf down some delicious barbeque and listen to the playlists of Zapata, Meinhold and the other industry professionals who frequently show for Solo.
For just $20 per person, guests can belly up to the self-serve bar that includes three large vat punch dispensers containing hand-crafted concoctions from The Federal’s talented Booze Fairy Emily Brown, an icy trough well-stocked with uber cold PBR cans, sodas and bottled water and, of course, plenty of Solo cups to hold it all. Hungry imbibers can also mosey on over to The Pit for some delicious down-home barbecue and fixin’s from mastermind Chef/Owner Zapata.
Batch cocktail choices, which rotate weekly but always feature three varieties, include the Ani Palmer - a playful take on the traditional Arnold Palmer with jasmine tea, fresh pressed lemon-ginger juice, orange and prosecco; Cucumber Watermelon Punch - fresh pressed watermelon juice infused with sliced cucumber, garden mint and topped with bubbles; White Peach Sangria – fresh citrus and berries, Cointreau, and a bourbon simple syrup-spike; Passion Fruit and chile "Margarita" – fresh passion fruit juice spiked with garden chiles and La Quinta Agave Wine for a traditional tequila kick. From behind bar, non-alcoholic watermelon agua fresca and peach iced tea will also be flowing.
Appetizers and Sides ($8-$12) on offer include BBQ Deviled Eggs – barbeque braised bacon, Serrano peppers and creamy horseradish; Texas-Style Elote – charred poblano pepper, lemon pepper, cotija cheese; Grilled Peaches & Ricotta – artisan ricotta, blueberries, smoked honey and Thai basil; Southwest Mac & Cheese – three cheeses, poblano peppers and chipotle biscuit crumbs; Braised Collard Greens with smoked pig tail, pickled peppers and a fried egg; and Summertime Watermelon with bourbon, chipotle, lemon and mint. From The Pit ($8-$18) comes mouthwatering choices such as Camp Fire Bacon, made in-house and served with maple and chives; St. Louis-Style Pork Ribs, dry rubbed with pickled peaches; Hawaiian Duck Leg in a Coca-Cola Hoisin glaze with scallions and sesame seeds; Charred Octopus – jalapeno sweet chili, pickled celery, dried olives and herbs; and a Smoked Short Rib, served bone-in and market cut with espresso barbeque sauce, among others.
Tunes get a personal touch too, with favorite playlists from Zapata, Meinhold, or an outside chef, mixologist or other industry professional, bellowing from the speakers.
Owned and operated since January 2012 by husband and wife team Chef Cesar Zapata and Service Maven Aniece Meinhold, The Federal is a modern American tavern serving comfort food classics with an updated edge. Geared to be a neighborhood meeting point where folks congregate to enjoy great food and drink, the restaurant sources ingredients exclusively from American artisans. Describing their restaurant/concept as a celebration of American integrity, ingenuity and craftsmanship, Zapata and Meinhold make light of their demanding positions referring to themselves as “Stove Master and Pig Whisperer” (Zapata) and “Bar Wench and Pot Stirrer” (Meinhold). Born in Colombia, reared in New Jersey and taught his craft in Texas, Zapata creates good ol’ American comfort food classics, utilizing old world French techniques and infusing touches from his diverse upbringing. The restaurant offers Supper, Weekend Brunch, bottomless Happy Hour and a progressive bar program with innovative beer and wine cocktails.
