’ll take a Mead please! When is the last time you have heard that? Probably never, but owner Matt Kuscher is trying to change that with his newest spot The Spillover that is taking over the Coconut Grove food scene. Dubbed a “Handsome Surf N’ Turf restaurant pouring a variety of ciders, meads and sours, this place serves some of the best seafood and lesser known beverages in Miami.
What is a Mead, you say? The best way for it to be described is a fermented honey wine of sorts; think of your favorite Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio with some delicious honey added, light but full flavored that keeps you wanting more. Best part? ABV can range from 8-20% and pairs delightfully with all of their seafood. Start off with their in house smoked fish dip that comes with saltines, celery sticks and a mini bottle of Tobasco, feeling over the top? Order their tomato salad which is their play on a Greek salad, huge chunks of heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, grilled bread and fresh red onions topped with their vinaigrette and the most amount of Feta Cheese you have ever seen in your life. Then it is only necessary to dig into their Pan Con Minuta, it is the epitome of a Cuban fish sandwich. Crunchy Fish Filet (tail included of course) with fresh onions and a creamy sauce with a side of your choice. How can you possibly top that? Matt’s Mother’s Guava Bread Pudding! The only way to describe this dessert is rich and decadent and good to the last drop. You can be assured that you have come to the right place when you find out the owner’s lineage.
Kuscher owns The Lokal in Coconut Grove as well as the infamous Kush Burger Bar in Wynwood with plans to expand with even more concepts in the future. He said that The Spillover was a lifelong dream as he loves Ciders & Seafood and we can’t thank him enough for pursuing his dreams. You can enjoy all of this and more in their eclectic space right on Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove for lunch and dinner.
