Puerto Rico Iconic Dish – Mofongo

mofongo in wynwood

Sometimes considered Puerto Rico’s finest addition to the culinary world, mofongo is usually served alongside the broth that was used to help shape it, making it easier for the diner to consume without it being too starchy. Puerto Rican meals involve a heavily spiced and hearty cuisine that is representative of the country’s history. African influences are quite prominent, as most of this country’s main dishes are centered around the plantain, a starchy and green sibling of the banana. Mofongo is made by smashing fried pieces of plantain with fried pork skin and other seasonings using a mortar and pestel.
