Pastelitos de Guayaba at Karla Bakery

Pastelitos de Guayaba may be the epitome of a Miamian snack, and Karla Bakery may be offering some of the best in the city. This bakery has been open for over 20 years, and it has been giving the people of Miami a taste of what honest and true Cuban cuisine should be. Whether it is sandwiches or pastries, the food here is top notch, and it is a prime example of what a Cuban cafeteria is. Walking in, you will smell and hear the Cuban coffee being made. Most of the time (especially in the mornings) the line will be out the door, but it is a fast moving process that only adds to the experience. Like this, the food and pastries you will get are ensured to be the freshest possible. In reality, this is what sets Karla Bakery from other bakeries around town. We can be proud to offer decent iterations of Guava pastries anywhere throughout the city, but the fact that Karla Bakery takes an effort in making sure the ones you get are fresh take the experience to the next level.

The pastry dough is buttery and light, giving you the ability to actually eat the pastelito layer by layer if that is what you want. When you get the actual guava part of the pastry, you can taste the difference between what is usually offered in most pastelitos and what they use here. At Karla Bakery, the guava actually tastes like the fruit they claim to be using instead of just tasting like sweet sugar. It is never too solidified where you have to chew it but not loose enough that it is a liquid. Instead, it is the right consistency and portion sized, letting you enjoy the dough as well. Personally, I forgo the cleanliness of eating it piece by piece and just take a healthy bite, causing crumbs of pastry dough to cover my face and clothes. It allows me to experience a range of textures and flavors that lead to what I believe is one of the best eating experiences in the city. It may be a bit messy, but at least I leave with evidence that I am eating some of the best pastelitos the city has to offer.

The fact that this place is open 24 hours solidifies its place in the pantheon of pastelito greats. Just knowing that you can get them anytime of the day is enough to make me a fan for life. I know for a fact that if I lived closer, these would be on my daily rotation.
