NY’s Big Apple Deli

There are few New York Style Delis in Miami, but out of the ones we do have, NY’s Big Apple Deli is one of the more authentic ones. This deli tries to maintain a philosophy that by serving high-quality food at fair and reasonable prices, it will lead to a satisfied clientele. Sure, this philosophy is something that all restaurants try to achieve, but doing so as a deli is no small feat. For a deli to be able to do this, most things have to be homemade, but this is something that is extremely difficult to do when your menu is over 30 items deep and each dish is made up of various components. NY’s Big Apple Deli prepares all of its food fresh everyday—their meats are cooked in their ovens and their soups and salads are made with only the freshest and finest ingredients. Food is typical NY-style Jewish deli: egg salad, corned beef, bagels, egg salad, matzo ball soup and much more.

My favorite item on the menu is the Pastrami sandwich. For a little less than $10, you get an extremely generous portion of pastrami served warm between your choice of bread and a side of cole slaw or potato salad. Pastrami and rye are a perfect combination, and this deli gets it right. The pastrami is thinly sliced and is seasoned well with a heavy hand on the coriander and pepper with a smoked flavor that is not too overpowering. It goes well between the buttered and toasted rye bread, which happens to be fresh and doesn’t lack in the rye flavor. It may sound redundant, but I’ve found most rye bread at other delis to not taste like rye at all, so it was a pleasant surprise to find this. Slather on some mustard and you’re good to go. The potato salad was forgettable, acting only as a refreshing foil to the heavy flavors coming from the sandwich.

NY’s Big Apple Deli has an extremely friendly staff with a clientele that you can tell come here on a regular basis. You’ll see people walking in and being greeted by name and with hugs. Because of this established clientele, it may be hard to grab a table, especially at peak hours. Weekend mornings and lunchtime seem to get quite hectic, but things move quickly. If you’re patient, your time waiting will pay off. So sit down, sip on some coffee, and become a regular.
