Introducing Libertine, downtown’s new bar where eclectic beats and renegade cocktails take center stage. Slated to open in June 2015 at 40 NE 11th Street, Libertine is a bar for the people; start the night sipping a proper Old Fashioned from an arm chair, bring in the new day swigging whisky on top of the bar's Baby Grand, and if not for a dusting of glitter and memories of Iggy Pop piping from the DJ booth, forget everything that happened in between. With an interior hearkening back to the glamorously decayed watering holes of turn of the century London, Libertine’s interior features eclectic décor like a floor covered in thousands of pennies, easy leather sofas a DJ booth fashioned from a re-purposed Baby Grand piano, and an expansive cocktail bar featuring a comprehensive mixology program.
Enter through a long access shaft that feels purposefully hidden, lined in vintage chicken wire, glass and raw steel columns. Turn the corner and behold Libertine – tucked away, dim and at the same time decadent. Designed by Thrilwall Design, Libertine is lined with 150 year-old reflective mirrors and subway tile, apothecary containers and shelving that illuminates bourbons, whiskeys and hundreds of other specialty liquors. The floor is covered in thousands of real pennies, sorted by finish to create a trompe l’oeil. Comfortable leather sofas are mixed with retro-style light armchairs and coffee tables in front of two opposing walls featuring an 18th century white marble fireplace and a wall of books framed by green velvet curtains while elements like burlesque chandeliers, poker tables, and antique rugs line the space. Music programming is curated by Supermarket Creative’s Michelle Leshem, and sounds will include cult classics, new wave and indie like Pulp Beastie Boys, Yelle, The Sonics, Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, to melodic dance sounds from Soul Clap, Aeroplane, Holy Ghost!, Flight Facilities, Groove Armada, Escort and more.
Libertine’s bar runs the gamut, from shots and beers, to full-scale mixology and specialty cocktails. Prohibition style cocktails range from The Libertine (Bulleit Rye, Sweet Vermouth, Elderflower Liquer, bitters, Cognac) to Firewater (Grey Goose vodka, Bacardi Superior rum, grenadine, sugar, fresh squeezed orange juice), to a barrel of authentic Libertine Moonshine which will sit behind the bar.
