The aged-old question of what to have for dinner can be tough — especially when there is confusion now on what is open or closed with COVID. Miami is a constant revolving door when it comes to restaurants, but you can always count on there being several spots that are staples and noteworthy at any given moment. Many of the coolest spots below are in some of the most unexpected neighborhoods — Upper Buena Vista, South Miami, and evening Allapattah are currently having a moment.
You know that really great food truck tucked into the Design District, called La Pollita that was a popular stop on our Miami Culinary Tours’ Design District Tour? Well, those great minds didn’t go too far. Just down the street in the Buena Vista area, you’ll find the newly opened Boia. The menu features cannellini beans with parmesan broth, littleneck clams, maltagliati, and crispy guanciale; sweet corn agnolotti with snow crab, Meyer lemon, and tarragon; and pappardelle alla lepre rabbit sugo, rosemary, and tomato. Stick around for dessert — local ice cream company Frice has some special treats on the menu.
Everyone knows and loves chefs Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis of Stiltsville-fame and their most recent South Miami spot, Root n Bone. For their newest venture, they’re doing Italian comfort food. Mi’talia Kitchen & Bar features twists on classic Italian dishes like a cauliflower arancini and bolognese with ricotta gnudi. They’ve also launched pizza and prosecco Tuesdays where the menu boasts weekly pizza specials and 50% off bottles of bubbles.
Le Jardinier is a fancy new vegetable-forward hot spot in Design District by a Joël Robuchon protégé. The menu is filled with perfectly plated colorful dishes with a variety of fresh seasonal produce options. Dishes are well portioned and pair nicely with the impressive cocktail menu. Those who have gluten restrictions (and those who don’t) will love the bread basket filled with multiple types of gluten free bread, fresh from the oven.
A New York City transplant, straight from Brooklyn is now open in Allapattah. An old warehouse turned barbeque joint is cranking out as many smokey meats as diners can handle. This meaty menu includes brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, and pulled pork. Have your meat on its own by the half pound or go for them in taco or sandwich form. Complete the meal with any — or all — of the comforting side dishes like the queso mac, pit beans, corn pudding, or slaw. There’s also a full liquor bar to help wash it all down.
