There is always something going on in the culinary scene in Miami, and we recommend these events in Miami this weekend June 27, 2014.
This Tuesday, you will be treated to a five-course meal engaging the five senses; sight, smell, touch, sound, and most importantly, taste. This event will take place at 50 Ocean, a restaurant whose sole purpose is to provide you with a unique Floridian experience, complete with local ingredients and mementos of a Florida both past and present. Tickets are $140 per person and include an alcoholic pairing with every course. Indulge in items like a duo of east coast oysters served with beetroot and orange jelly, radish, celery, and braised fennel paired with a duo of Moet et Chandon shots and tapioca sand served with cured local wahoo, beachwood mushrooms, seabeans, poached scallops and lobster tail paired with sake sizzle. Ever since its inception, one of the top destinations in Miami’s food scene has been the Federal Food and Provisions. Led by Chef Cesar Zapata, this modern tavern is an ode to all things American, both in a regional and cultural sense. Back dropping a bit, this same chef was also the mastermind behind our fair city’s first pop-up, Phuc Yea, a Vietnamese-inspired restaurant focusing on Southeast Asian cuisine such as Pho. So it makes perfect sense for Zapata to work together with 50 Eggs restaurant, Khong River, in a collaboration event allowing him to showcase his ingenuity when it comes to Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. Compared to other Chef Series held at Khong River, this specific one may deviate a bit from the norm. Usually, these dinners include a 5-course meal, but Zapata is changing the ideology and will instead offer smaller plates amounting to almost ten tastings. These collaboration events provide Miami with the opportunity to become engaged in fun and creative menus that popular restaurants would not offer, so prepare to taste dishes such as Jellyfish and Chicharron salad and Crab Roe Soup.

Nothing screams out summer like kids going to camps, the beach, or indulgent food. Actually, a better way to celebrate summer would be to combine all these things into one event. This Friday, the Pediatric Psychology Associates' Growing Tree Foundation, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making therapeutic and recreational opportunities easily reached by all children with health challenges, is hosting their Second Annual Summer Kickoff Happy Hour Fundraiser at Calamari Restaurant. Through this fundraiser, you will be able to help sponsor a special needs child for surf camp this summer. All proceeds from this event will be used to fund scholarships to specialty therapeutic summer camps for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. For $25 (or $30 at the door), you will be able to enjoy a welcome glass of Proseco, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, 50% off drinks until 9:00 p.m, and a silent auction. Last years event helped raise enough funds to sponsor ten children to attend Surf and Paddleboard Camp, and this year, the PPA is hoping for an even better turnout.

This Friday and Saturday, BBQ restaurant Brother Jimmy’s will be celebrating the grand opening of its third South Florida location. The first two restaurants, located in Mary Brickell Village and Sunset Place, will be joined by the Dolphin Mall location in efforts to bring a fun and casual BBQ experience to the Miami food landscape. Delicious food, libatious drinks, and family fun including a child’s fashion show, live music, and mechanical bull rides will mark the weekend. You can bring your child to have their picture taken by Miami’s Talent & Model Group Agency for a possibility of starring in the Brother Jimmy’s Fashion shows at 2:30 and 4:30 on Saturday. This could eventually lead to a year’s modeling contract.
At Jimmy’s, all the food is made in house and they offer everything you would expect from your typical North Carolina-style ‘cue joint. Selections include ribs (wet and dry-rubbed), brisket, pulled pork, and smoked chicken. Based from our experiences at their past locations, we recommend the brisket for a succulent and indulgent meal. Kids always eat for free at Brother Jimmy’s, so grab the family and come with an appetite for BBQ.

Miami Beach may be known for being a culinary landscape of high regard, but when it comes to the craft beer scene, this area of the city is not necessarily the most known. While other area in South Florida like Oakland Park and Wynwood are home to breweries that are becoming extremely established on a national level, you’d be lucky to find bars even offering a decent selection of craft beer in areas like South Beach. Luckily, locals who know about The Abbey Brewing Company keep it in regard as a hangout to get away from the tourists and typical Miami Beach life. Established in 1995, the Abbey is Miami Beach’s oldest and only brew-pub. They have four house beers brewed on premises, but they also offer a selection of 10 guest beers that range from Belgian ales to local beers. We recommend Brother Aaron’s Quadruple Ale, a strong beer that tastes of dark chocolate and caramelized raisins with a hint of toffee. This Sunday marks their 19th anniversary, and the Abbey is hosting a party to celebrate. Enjoy open bar from 11 a.m. to noon on select drafts and drinks, 12 craft beers on tap for $5 each, $5 shots, premium well mixed drinks, and a complimentary pig roast.
