THOMPSON HOSPITALITY BRINGS TWO CONCEPTS TO FORT LAUDERDALE–

BIG BUNS DAMN GOOD BURGERS & MATCHBOX OPENING FEBRUARY 2022

Thompson Hospitality, one of the largest retail food service management companies in the country, is pleased to announce the addition of two huge concepts to their portfolio in Florida — Big Buns Damn Good Burgers and Matchbox. Projected to open February 2022, Matchbox — with a current location in Sunrise, Florida — will expand in Broward County along with Big Buns, which will now call South Florida home for the first time. Located alongside one another in the bustling Las Olas area, Fort Lauderdale’s premier hub for socializing, dining, and entertainment on the New River, these concepts will boast some of the best waterfront views the city has to offer.

Big Buns Damn Good Burgers’ name does not lie. It all started with a road trip while traveling cross-country in 2002. Founder Craig Carey couldn’t help but notice that every town he visited had a “Best Burger” and it made him curious as to why there were no restaurants that served more than one style burger. This simple question became the start of his journey. This fine-casual spot strives to serve the world’s most delicious and innovative burgers while sharing the feel of a backyard party with their guests; ‘Damn Good Experience’ is the brand’s mission. “We do this by showing love and compassion in all our actions, operating our business with integrity, and putting delicious smiles on our customer’s faces,” says Carey.

In 2007, Big Buns opened their first location in Arlington, Virginia and has been expanding ever since. Beyond serving your classic burger, Big Buns offers never-before-seen burgers such as Frickin Good Chicken, prepared with fried chicken, avocado, shredded lettuce, dill pickles, and topped with buttermilk herb ranch; Hot & Hef, with angus beef, pepper jack cheese, avocado, grilled habanero, serrano house pico de gallo, and sriracha aioli; and Peppercorn Steakhouse, with angus beef, gruyère, fried onion straws, sautéed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, tellicherry, and peppercorn mayo. The menu will also serve a variety of bowls, sides and over-the-top shakes including Redonculous Reese’s Shake and The Unicorn Shake (a hand-spun strawberry shake with rainbow sprinkles, sour patch twists and ginormous marshmallows). The restaurant will offer 40 indoor and 75 outdoor seats overlooking the popular Las Olas Boulevard.

Shortly following the Big Buns opening, Matchbox will open its doors as an intimate neighborhood dining destination. In July 2003, Matchbox opened its first location in Washington DC and quickly became known for wood-fired pizzas, mini burgers, fresh salads and chef-inspired entrées, like Miso salmon and chimichurri steak frites. Matchbox is growing rapidly with multiple restaurants in DC, Virginia, Maryland, and in Sunrise at the Sawgrass Mills Mall — which opened in 2017. Diners can expect elevated American-bistro fare crafted from high quality ingredients. Matchbox has been successful over the years by staying true to the concept’s original beliefs, continuing to be inspired by creating friendly, high-energy gathering places with delicious food and drinks. “Guests will enjoy more than mini burgers, blazing hot pizzas, chef-crafted dishes, and delicious cocktails,'' says Brand Manager Michelle Nguyen. "At Matchbox, memories are made." This 3,757-square-foot space will feature seating for 214, including an expansive patio. Both concepts share the same goal of bringing people together, spreading positivity, happy experiences and unforgettable food.

Warren Thompson, President and Chairman of Thompson Hospitality, started the company in 1992. The company is built on values gained from 30-years of client, customer and community relationships. Veterans in the hospitality industry, the company currently owns and operates over two dozen restaurants with plans to open 17 more during 2022.

Matchbox and Big Buns are slated to open February 2022 at 301 SW 1st Avenue, South Tower in Las Olas, Fort Lauderdale. Big Buns will be open Sunday - Wednesday; 11AM - 10PM, Thursday – Saturday; 11AM - 11PM. Matchbox will initially be open Monday – Thursday; 3PM - 10PM, Friday; 3PM - 11PM, Saturday – Sunday; 10AM - 3PM for brunch and offer dinner service from 3PM until close.
