3 Chefs We Love In The Wynwood District and Why

wynwood chefs

In the last few years, Wynwood has made itself a mecca for food, art, and culture in Miami. With its rapid growth has come a plethora of amazing talent. There are dozens of great restaurants in the Wynwood neighborhood with concepts ranging from fast-casual to Italian to classic American comfort food and everything in between. The chefs in these kitchens have become the heartbeat of Miami and have played a large role in the evolution of Miami’s culinary scene without them, the area wouldn’t be nearly as exciting to visit.

Here are three chefs who have stolen our hearts and found a home in Wynwood:

Brad Kilgore of Alter

Looking for elevated cuisine during a visit to Wynwood? It’s nearly impossible to do without a visit to Alter by Brad Kilgore. Each dish at this restaurant is plated to perfection offering an experience like no other in the area. Brad’s attention to detail and dedication to flavor make him one of the best chefs in the city.

Why we love him: Brad’s a true pioneer when it comes to fine dining in Miami. One of the first (and best deals) when it comes to a Chef’s Tasting menu which features 7-courses for $125 per person. Don’t skip out on the soft egg, it’s one of his most coveted signature dishes.

Michael McGowan of Pink Pie

Co-founder and chef at beloved Pink Pie in Wynwood, Michael McGowan is a classically trained chef, whose current specialty is mini pies. A handful of pies flavors are available on a daily basis, but his recipe book has over 300 tried and true recipes that are featured on a rotating basis throughout the year. Favorites include Key lime, Nutella Oreo, and birthday cake. Book the Miami Culinary Tours’ Wynwood route for a chance to take Michael’s delicious creations.

Why we love him: Michael isn’t afraid to think outside the box in order to make the flavors happen. Take the s’mores pie for example that’s smoked with hickory wood and uses burnt marshmallows inside the filling, recreating the s’mores campfire experience. Michael, we are grateful for you and your mini pies.

Raheem Sealey of KYU Miami

As Head Chef at KYU, it’s not the first time Raheem has worked with KYU’s owner Chef Michael Lewis. Raheem’s skills got him recruited to Zuma by Chef Lewis years ago, and made him one of the first people on his radar when KYU opened in 2016. He quickly rose from sous chef to head chef and as Chef Lewis says, “He’s really the one that makes the magic happen in the kitchen.”

Why we love him: Raheem is a master at executing incredible dishes over and over making every visit consistently perfect. From the roasted cauliflower to the coconut cake, every bite is almost better than the last and Raheem is the one to thank.
