Squealing For Swine

Sometimes a new restaurant opens and you can’t help but be a little nervous that it won’t live up to the hype. Hailing from the owners of top South Beach restaurants Yardbird and Khong River House, Swine Southern Table & Bar has a lot to live up to; but only a few weeks into calling Coral Gables home, it’s clear this place will stick around for awhile.

With two levels of seating including big community tables, intimate spots for pairs and even two fully-stocked bars for lingering, this place is ready to accommodate any and everyone in a downhome Southern fashion. Their cocktail menu consists of a variety of inventive beverages alongside an outstanding selection of bourbon, whiskey, scotch, rum and more. For those who prefer wine and beer, they have plenty of that too. All have a great presentation like this “Homestead Bound,” a refreshing mix of Russian Standard Vodka, VeeV Acai, fresh strawberries, orange, lemon, basil and mint ($12).

With drink in hand, it’s time to take a look at the food. Their offerings are divided into small plates, big plates, sides called “fixins” and salads. It’s a good idea to come with a group to have an excuse to try a bit of everything because just about all dishes can be considered a must-try. A great starter is the homemade cornbread infused with jalapeño, cheddar and bacon, served with a side of honey butter ($9).

The intoxicating smell of BBQ pork hits you before even walking through the door. That most likely comes from the 14-Hour House Smoked Brisket ($32) or the Dry-Rubbed & Smoked Memphis-Style Spare Ribs ($32). These tender and juicy ribs are unlike any you can find in Miami.

On the side, do not miss the Mac & Cheese – “pig tail” macaroni, bacon, five cheese and a crispy herb crust ($10). Heavenly.

While it might be hard, you will want to save room for dessert. With choices like warm apple pie with buttermilk ice cream, molten chocolate peanut butter cake and red velvet layer cake to tempt you, it might be hard to pick just one. The most popular dessert so far is proving to be the “Warm Sticky Icky Bun” – a sticky bun with maple-bourbon toffee syrup, pecan butter, candied smoked bacon and “sweet potato pie” ice cream ($9). Yes, bacon for dessert.

This is the type of supper that you daydream about the day after. They are already offering daily lunch, dinner and a weekend brunch, making it easier to visit all week long. Do yourself a favor and run, don’t walk, to this new Gables hotspot.
