Through July 31, Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak is offering a chef’s market menu that consists of three appetizer, entrée and dessert choices, which change daily. Miami Hotel Dining Deals for Summer – The Setai

Posted: Friday, July 2nd, 2010

The Setai

Summer is a slow season for Miami hotels. It’s no wonder, then, that many of them are trying to—literally—cater to locals with happy hours, specially priced menus and other discounts. If you’ve been waiting to try (or return to) any of these hotel restaurants, now is the time!

The Setai

The Setai celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, and the celebrations include the unveiling of a new menu at The Restaurant, whose kitchen is helmed by award-winning Executive Chef Jonathan Wright, as well as a happy hour at The Bar & Courtyard.

Deal #1:
“Summer at The Setai,” $50

The Restaurant’s three-course prix-fixe menu changes weekly, rotating a number of the chef’s specialties. But you’ll always get freshly baked Indian Nan bread, Indonesian fish crackers and fresh Achars and Pickles, followed by an amuse bouche. The menu consists of a choice each from three appetizers, entrees and desserts.

Deal #2:

Maya Tapas & Grill Opens a Second Location in Miami Beach

Posted: Thursday, July 1st, 2010

filet mignon Maya Tapas

Let’s be honest, Lincoln Road isn’t necessarily known for its quality food (except you, Meat Market!). But two years ago Maya Tapas & Grill opened on the scenic street offering tasting small dishes and a social setting to match its location. The Argentinean restaurant quickly became a favorite for locals.

This month, owner Rolando Maya along with his wife Marsha and three children Alejandro, Martin and Sara announced the opening of Maya Tapas & Grill at 530 Ocean Drive. Unlike its Lincoln Road counterpart, the 4, 500 square-foot Ocean Drive location offers an indoor dining area along with its outdoor patio seating, plus a lounge and full bar. But like the original location, you can expect Argentinean dishes by chef Hector Diaz. And the menu tends to be easy on the wallet with specials as low as $4.95 for breakfast and $9.95 for lunch. The breakfast menu offers a twist on brunch classics including an array of three-egg omelets to dishes like lox breakfast, Maya eggs benedict and smoked salmon eggs benedict. Lunch items include perennial favorites alongside fresh, new seasonal dishes such as the Maya tropic salad, Maya’s signature avocado salad and several other soups, salads, pizzas, pastas and sandwiches to choose from. For dinner, choose from an assortment of meat and fish specialties including their signature asado, buerre blanc Florida red snapper, lemon honey salmon or opt for one of their risottos. Patrons can also enjoy selections from their warm and cold tapas menu. Hot tapas include baked brie, morcilla Argentina, garlic shrimp, mussels Provencal among others or choose from their cold tapas, which includes ceviche of the day, beef carpaccio, olive tapenade, bruschetta and more.

And when they say family-owned, they mean it. You’re sure to see Rolando Maya, his wife Marsha and three children Alejandro, Martin and Sara, greeting customers. Customers tend to become family, and what better way to show the love then by offering half off the entire wine list? Monday through Wednesday enjoy half-priced bottle of wine, and if you’re a local get your corkage fee waived. Sounds like our kind of place!

Aw, Shucks! Area 31′s “We Cook While They Clean” Gulf Aid Fundraiser

Posted: Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

There are a ton of things you can do to contribute to the ongoing cleanup efforts on the Gulf coast.

Among those that don’t quite count as sacrifice? Eating oysters at Area 31. The sustainability-oriented seafood restaurant has announced that it will be participating in “We Cook While They Clean,” a nationwide fundraising effort in which restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to the cleanup efforts.

As of June 23, $1 from every Oyster Primi dish ordered at Area 31 during lunch or dinner will be donated to the Gulf Relief Foundation. The oyster platter consists of six chilled Island Creek oysters from Massachusetts, served alongside a mignonette sauce and lemons.

It’s not the first time Area 31 has gotten on board with a good cause. Named for the Area 31 fishing area that encompasses the marine waters of the United States’ southeast Atlantic coast, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and South America’s northeast coast, the restaurant is widely hailed as a local pioneer for its sustainable ocean-to-table fishing practices. It even has a longstanding relationship with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, which certifies seafood suppliers from sustainable fishing environments and works to educate people about how making sensible seafood choices contributes to the conservation of ocean resources.

So how long can you do good while simultaneously feeding your inner glutton? “Until fishermen are back in their boats,” according to a press release issued by the restaurant. “We wanted to support those who have been most affected and displaced by this oil spill, especially those fishermen who we rely on everyday in our restaurants,” John Critchley, Area 31′s executive chef, said in a press release. “We are coming together and making an honest commitment to these fishermen.”
